The Top 10 Disney Rides, Restaurants and Resorts

Disney Top 10 WDW Resorts for kids

Jan 19, 2008 Author: keith | Filed under: Walt Disney World

Most people head to Walt Disney World with kids in tow. One of the most important decisions in planning your Disney World vacation is deciding where to stay. And if you will have kids along with you, that decision becomes even more important. So, here are out top 10 Disney resorts for kids.

Animal Kingdom Lodge

#10: Port Orleans Riverside - Riverside, along with the other moderate resorts are ok for kids, but honestly, are better for adults without kids. They are quiet and decent resorts, but not anything overly fun or stimulating for kids. Riverside is the one exception, as they have a very fun pool, a cool boat you can ride to Downtown Disney along with the coolest thing, old time bamboo fishing poles you can rent and fish in the river. Riverside is a great resorts as well if you have three kids, as many of the rooms will sleep 5, the only moderate resort that has this amenity.

#9: Pop Century - While Pop Century, and the #8 All-Stars, were built for kids and families, they really aren’t the best resorts for kids. The pools do not have slides, and the resorts tend to get pretty crowded and often loud. Granted, Pop Century is well thought out and it is a fun resort. It has several big pools and a great arcade and food court, and plenty of Disney magic.

#8: All-Stars - While technically I would put All-Star Movies here at #8, in reality, the All-Stars are basically identical with only their theme separating the resorts. These resorts are similar to Pop Century, in not having a slide at the pools, but they have fun themes that kids seem to love. Whether your kids are into Sports, Music or Disney Movies, you can find something at one of these resorts to make your kids happy.

#7: Disney’s Fort Wilderness - Fort Wilderness offers both camping spots for tents, trailers and RVs as well as cool Wilderness Cabins. Kids love camping, and if you don’t want to rough it, the cabins are a great answer. Fort Wilderness has fun activities from campfires at night to hay rides and golf carts you can rent. A fun resort to spend time at for kids and adults.

#6: Polynesian - The Polynesian has many great attractions for kids, a great pool with ultra cool volcano slide, a beach, the monorail and a great view of the Magic Kingdom. The rooms are fun, and you really get into the feel of the Polynesian, especially at night, with the tiki torches. Plus, all kids love sitting on the beach and watching the water parade at night.

#5: Boardwalk Inn - Disney’s Boardwalk Inn is a great kids resort, with a fantastic roller coaster water slide at the pool, a great location near Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the Boardwalk right out your door. Not only are there great restaurants on the Boardwalk, including the ESPN Zone, but you can also rent surrey bikes and hang out and watch the buskers, where are a blast.

#4: Wilderness Lodge - The Wilderness Lodge is a great resort for kids, with a fun, swimming hole type pool, great courtyard area and one of the funnest restaurants in Disney, Whispering Canyon Cafe. Plus, there is a great boat ride over to the Magic Kingdom available if you wish. Also, you can get a room with bunk beds, which always seems to solve a few fights over sharing a bed between the kids. Now, you just have to deal with the fight over who gets to sleep on the top bunk.

#3: Beach Club/Yacht Club - While technically the Beach and Yacht Club are separate resorts, in most cases, they really are only one resort. The Beach Club and Yacht Club have the best pool by far at WDW, Stormalong Bay. In addition to the great water slide, this sand bottom pool has a lazy river, a whirlpool and many other fun places to explore. Kind of like having your own water park outside your hotel room. Plus, the Yacht and Beach Club is right next to Epcot, and not far from the Boardwalk and Disney’s Hollywood Studio.

#2:  Contemporary - there is just something magical about the Contemporary for kids. I don’t know if it is the monorail running through the lobby every few minutes, or the great views of the Magic Kingdom from the room, or the kids pool that is out in Bay Lake. The rooms are fun, just having been totally redone, and have nice balconies where kids can hang out and watch the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom. Plus, it is only a 5 minute walk over the Magic Kingdom if you don’t want to wait for the monorail, the only resort you can walk to the Magic Kingdom from.

#1: Animal Kingdom Lodge -  Well, kind of a no brainer for me. The Animal Kingdom Lodge is my kids favorite resort, and that holds true for most kids I have ever asked. With rooms right on savannas, kids can sit and watch the animals for hours from their rooms. Plus, there is a great pool with super fun water slide and you can even see animals from the pool area. Just a great place for kids to stay, they never seem to complain when you are leaving the parks to head back to the resort.

Walt Disney World has 23 resorts on Disney property, and there are hundreds of off-site resorts near Disney World. Disney offers many benefits to stay in one of the Disney resorts, and honestly, I can’t give you any benefits to staying off site. While I had a hard time limiting this list to the top 10, I managed to do it finally.

Andy

#10: Refillable Mugs - All of the Disney resorts offer refillable mugs for sale, good for your entire trip at your home resort, and can be filled with soda, as well as tea, coffee, hot chocolate and some resorts even have frozen Coke. Mugs run about $13 each with tax, and if you are staying for longer than a few days, the refillable mugs make for a great way to save money on drinks while at your resort, and a great souvenir that you can take home with you.

#9: Free Parking - Disney resort guests get free parking at their resort, as well as at all of the Disney theme parks, water parks, and other Disney resorts. If you are driving to Disney World, or renting a car once there, the free parking is very nice, and a big money saver. Off-site guests pay $10+ per day to park at the theme parks, an expense that you don’t have to pay.

#8: Room Key Charging - Staying at a Disney resort, at check-in, you get the option of setting up your room key as a virtual credit card. You will be able to use your room key to charge at all Disney restaurants, resorts, gift shops, well, basically everywhere on property that accepts a credit card, and is Disney owned (some of the restaurants in Downtown Disney do not accept room keys as payment). This is a great convenience, as you don’t have to carry your entire wallet or purse, just your room key and a few bucks in cash. Each charge is itemized and can be checked out at your front desk at any time. At check-out, you can confirm all charges, and they will be charged to your credit card in one lump some.

#7: Resort Deliver of Package - Image, if you can, walking down Main Street in the Magic Kingdom, and your daughter falls in love with a life size Pooh bear in one of the shop windows. Remember, it is 9 AM. What are you going to do? Staying at a Disney resort, you can go ahead and buy Pooh and have it sent back to your resort, you will be able to pick him up when you return from the parks, and only have to carry him up to the room. A much better option that having to carry Pooh around the Magic Kingdom all day.

#6: Disney Resorts - Disney has some of the most unique resorts around. Staying off-property, you may get a nice pool, but it will be basically a hotel. Disney has a resort surrounded by live animals (Animal Kingdom Lodge), one that makes you feel like you are really in the South Pacific (Polynesian) and a near replica of the Old Faithful Lodge from Yellowstone (Wilderness Lodge). All Disney resorts offer great theming, and really give you a unique vacation experience.

#5: Disney Transportation - Whether it is one of the Disney buses, Disney boats or the monorail, Disney offers a fast and fun way to get from your Disney resort to any part of the Walt Disney World kingdom. All of the Disney transportation is included in your Disney resort stay, and most kids have just as much fun getting to the parks as they do once they are in the parks. There is just something magical about riding the monorail back to your room.

#4: Disney Dining Plan - Disney World offers a great dining plan that can be used in the resorts and theme parks, but the only way to get it is to stay at a Disney resort (you must also purchase a Magic Your Way package including your resort room and park passes, but that is a small requirement). The Dining plan is a great money saver, and a great way to budget, as you know the cost of all that theme park food in advance. It also allows you to be able to go to restaurants you normally would not, as everything is paid for in advance. I no longer will go to Disney without the Disney Dining Plan, it just make my vacation just that much better, I can’t imagine going without it.

#3: Extra Magic Hours - Each day, at least one Disney theme park is open one hour early, and at least one is open three hours late, in addition to the hours the parks are open to the public. So, by staying with Disney, you can enjoy the Disney theme parks for 4 hours longer each day. Not only are many of the day guests gone once the parks close, but all of the Disney theme parks are beautiful at night, it is a real treat to be able to walk around a non-busy park and just enjoy the sites.

#2: Disney’s Magical Express - All Disney resort guests, who fly into Orlando International (MCO) receive free airport transportation to and from their Disney World resort. In addition to the transportation, Disney will also handle all of your luggage, so you just hop off the plane and onto the Magical Express, and your luggage will show up in your room later on in the day. A great convenience for those flying in, and a huge money saver, as you no longer have to rent a car at the airport. The Magical Express is fast, convenient and best of all, free.

#1: Disney Magic 24 hours per day - Kids and adults alike feel the Disney theme parks are magical. Staying at a Disney resorts means you never have to leave the magic. Whether it is the fantastic Disney resorts, wonderful Disney service or the special events going on at each resort, you never have to leave Disney on your Disney vacation. Watch the Water Parade from the beach at the Polynesian, release lady bugs into the gardens at the Grand Floridian or take a resort tour at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Do you have any other reasons why you stay on Disney property?

Disney Top 10 WDW swimming pools

Nov 27, 2007 Author: keith | Filed under: Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World has some fantastic swimming pools, and why not? You have swimming weather available to you most of the year, and thousands of resorts guests looking for a break from the heat and theme park crowds. While the water parks are great, there is an entrance fee involved, and often, they are just as crowded as the parks. So, if you are picking your resort based on the swimming pool, here are the top 10:

Stormalong Bay

#10: Contemporary Resort Pool - The Contemporary features a very nice pool, with a nice, if tame, water slide. The location on the back side of the Contemporary allows the pool to be very quiet and a bit removed from all the activity of the parks. A great beach is adjacent to the pool, and don’t miss the quiet pool just a few steps away, it actually “floats” over Bay Lake.

#9: Port Orleans Riverside Pool - Ol’Man Island at Port Orleans Riverside sits on it’s own island in the Sassagoula River. With easy acces from either the Mansions or Bayou side of the resort, the pool is quite and fits in quite well with the resort. There is a great little water slide and plenty of fun areas to explore. A bit on the small side, but worth the visit.

#8: Old Key West Pool - What used to be one of the worst pools at Disney World, Old Key West just finished a total rehab of their pool, and it now features a nice water slide and play area for little kids. It has nice views overlooking Old Key West, though my one complaint is that it is not private at all.

#7: Polynesain Pool - The Nanea Volcano Pool is a recent addition to the Polynesian. The Volcano water slide is the main feature, and is quite fun. The pool features many quiet areas, including semi-hidden hot tubs. There are also great views from most parts of the pool, including the Magic Kingdom and the nightly water parade.

#6: Saratoga Springs Pool - Great new pool at the new resort, with a super fun water slide, great kids area and plenty of places to sit and relax, both in the sun and shade. Surrounded by buildings though, not private at all.

#5: Grand Floridian Pool - a newer pool, located to the South of the Grand Floridian, Disney World did a great job or making it so that you can’t see the pool from the monorail or really, anywhere else. A great water slide and waterfall make this pool quiet and fun for everyone. Great white sand beach next to the pool is fun as well.

#4: Animal Kingdom Lodge Pool - a decent swimming pool, and very similar to the one at the Polynesian (they were built at the same time), the special thing about the Animal Kingdom Lodge pool is the fact that you can see animals from the pool area. While there won’t be any giraffe drinking out of the kiddie pool, it is special none the less.

#3: Wilderness Lodge Pool - another great pool, with a fun slide, great hot tub area new the geyser, and great views of Bay Lake. The pool actually starts with a small spring in the Wilderness Lodge Lobby, and as it exits under the windows, it grows to a large, roaring river that cascades through the courtyard. It eventually ends up in the pool, and then exits the pool and flows into Bay Lake. It really makes for a cool swimming experience.

#2: Boardwalk Inn Pool - I guess technically Luna Park is on the Boardwalk Villa side of the resort, but, oh well. With a fun Circus theme, and a 200 foot long water slide (Kiester Coaster), the Luna Park pool is fun, no matter what you are looking for. Great quiet areas and a fun, separate kids area make this a fantastic pool.

#1: Beach Club/Yacht Club Pool - Stormalong Bay is fantastic! A mini water park right outside your resort room. A unique sand bottom pool features a lazy river, a shallow beach area just for toddlers, a giant whirlpool, sinking sand, a sunken pirate ship and the best water slide at any Disney property. Located away from the main pool, a sunken pirate ship is marooned on the beach of the resort. Walk over, and you will find a kiddie pool with little slide perfect for toddlers. Dare to climb the mast? At the top, you will find the entrance to the water slide that takes you back to the main pool. Plenty of hidden surprises as well. By far the best pool, and a great reason to stay at either the Beach Club or Yacht Club.

Please note Disney World does not allow “pool hopping”, and many of the pools are closely watched and resort ID is required. So, if you want to swim in one of these great pools, you must stay at that resort.

Great views of the parks, a fun location near Downtown Disney and the monorail to Disneyland, it is far enough away from everything to be quite, but close enough to be convenient. Splurge for a theme park view concierge room, the view of the parks is fantastic.

#7: Wilderness Lodge - Located at Walt Disney World, the Wilderness Lodge is a replica of the old time railroad lodges of the West. Rustic and surrounded by pine forests, the Wilderness Lodge is quiet and feels remote, but is close to the parks. The only WDW resort with a honeymoon suite.

#3: Disneyland Hotel Paris - Located at the Disneyland Paris resort, the Disneyland Hotel Paris is actually located in the Disneyland Paris theme park. To enter the park, you have to walk under the resort (the ticket booths are on the ground level). Great views from the theme park view rooms, a short walk to either park, and an hour train ride to central Paris.

#2: Grand Floridian - Located at Walt Disney World, the Grand Floridian is Disney’s flagship resort. Opulent, breath taking and just a bit stuffy. Stunningly beautiful resort in a great location near the Magic Kingdom. If you want the best Disney has to offer, this is the place.

With great rooms, wonderful Magic Kingdom views, a beach, a fantastic pool and the monorail, the Polynesian is hard to beat.
